4 Tips for Sexual Experimentation With Your Partner

Trying anything for the first time can be a scary experience, and it’s normal to want to take things slow when you experiment with new activities. This is especially true in the bedroom, where some feel shame or embarrassment already. But sexual experimentation doesn’t have to be a taboo subject, and in fact, many such experiments can actually open up new avenues to pleasure that we may never have known existed.

Experimenting with your body, exploring these new avenues of pleasure with your partner, and doing so slowly, with copious amounts of trust and acceptance, can lead to a new level of fulfillment in your sex life as well as your relationship.

Make the Bedroom a Judgement-Free Space

Approaching sexual experimentation from the same place of acceptance and trust will ensure you and your partner both feel comfortable about what might unfold. Sit with each other before engaging in too much heavy petting, and communicate your hopes, fears and expectations for the experimentation. Talk about what boundaries you each have, and reassure each other that the bedroom is a judgement-free space.

Be Intentional With Your Experimentation

Remember that the purpose of sexual experimentation is to break the routine and try something new. Maybe it’s something you heard about from a friend, saw in a movie, or via some adult entertainment. Talk with your partner about what piques their interest, and be open-minded about what their response might be. Try and help your partner live out their fantasy at their own pace, providing a controlled, nurturing environment for them to explore.

Think of Sex as More Than Intercourse

Touching, kissing, and cuddling can all be considered sex, if done in a way that is intended to give a partner pleasure. Experimentation is less about positions and more about finding pathways to intimate connections. Make a point to deviate from the usual.

Talk About How Things Went

Don’t forget that communication is at the crux of every relationship, and it’s especially important when it comes to the bedroom. Talk about how you felt fulfilling each other's fantasies and experimenting with new sexual activities. Maybe you found you liked something more than you thought you would. Maybe you were open-minded to something, tried it, and it just didn’t tickle you. Whatever the outcome, tell your partner how you felt, how they did, and what you would like to do differently next time.
